Q: I’m not a grandparent. Can I be a member?
A: Of course! We are people who care about children growing up in a world free of gun violence, so they can grow, thrive and be safe in their homes, at school and in their communities. If you agree, please join us!
Q: What does it cost to join?
A: Annual dues (January 1 – December 31) are $25 for an individual, $40 for a family (multiple people in one household), pro-rated for those who join in the fourth quarter of a year.
Q: What are requirements of membership?
A: It’s up to you, although the greater your involvement, the more impact we can have creating a world for Missouri and Kansas children that’s free of gun violence. You can:

 

  • Sign up for weekly emails with current information about issues related to gun violence.
  • Attend informational meetings
    – 4th Monday of the month at 4PM at Colonial Church in Prairie Village
  • Follow our Facebook page.
  • Recruit additional members.
  • Volunteer for Lock it for Love or other activities.
  • Write letters to the editor giving your point of view.
Q: What’s your position on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?
A: We are NOT against guns. We are FOR gun safety, our Second Amendment rights to own and use guns responsibly, and common-sense protections for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, without compromising our Constitutional rights. See more here.
Q: Do you collaborate with other like-minded groups?

A: Yes. Our Heartland Coalition Against Gun Violence comprises more than two dozen government, social service, healthcare and nonprofit groups who work under that umbrella to sponsor an annual Community Forum as well as events for Sandy Hook Remembrance Day and Gun Violence Awareness Day. We are the Missouri affiliate of States United to Prevent Gun Violence and partner on some activities with the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gunsense in America, and Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice.

Q: What do my dues cover?
A: We pay a nominal fee for custodial support to the church where our monthly meetings are held, as well as costs associated with our web site, printed materials, some contracted services, the Lock it for Love project and the annual Heartland Coalition Community Forum. There is no staff; all board members and most providers of services (graphics, web site development etc.) donate or discount their time and talent.
Q: If gun violence is a national problem, why do you limit your scope to Missouri and Kansas?
A: Many other groups work on a national level to address concerns we share. We can have greater impact in our own communities, specifically in the metropolitan Kansas City area, and that is where we focus. There certainly is plenty of work to be done right here at home.
