Advocacy & Legislation: Protecting the LGBTQ+ Community
GGS Monthly Meeting & Program
Monday, May 22
4:00 – 5:30 pm
Colonial Church in Prairie Village, 7039 Mission Road

We read and hear about the LGBTQ+ community almost daily now, with much of the news troubling, including its members experiencing higher rates of bullying by others. Many times this leads to depression and suicide.

Activists say attitudes toward people identifying as LGBTQ+ are formed by “fear of the other” rather than empathy for their struggles. That’s been clearly illustrated this year in Topeka and Jefferson City where state legislators have passed measures restricting the community’s rights in areas from medical care to participation in sports.

Guest speakers include Melissa Stiehler, advocacy director of Loud Light in Lawrence; Kansas State Representative Susan Ruiz; Missouri State Senator Greg Razer; and Kansas City LGBTQ+ activist Hazel Krebs.

This is our opportunity to learn first-hand how we can stand with the LGBTQ+ community and support its members.
